It's Pancake Day
Once upon a time, in the late 1980s, the BBC made a brilliant children's sitcom which didn't talk down to kids but instead offered a genuinely funny, silly yet informative historical comedy which was to all intents and purposes a Blackadder for young viewers. The show was Maid Marian and her Merry Men, and to this day it holds a very warm place in the memories of millions of thirty-somethings in the UK. Without dwelling on the fact that - as the title suggests - it was a tongue-in-cheek but pointedly feminist take on the hoary Robin Hood legend (am I reading too much into this?), there's no better demonstration of its wonderful charm than its definitive, seminal take on the institution that is Shrove Tuesday, or as we all call it - Pancake Day. (The call-back at the end of this clip, by star and writer Sir Tony Robinson, is priceless).
